A couple king ratsnake questions

meretseger Nov 10, 2003 06:16 PM

I should be getting a pair of juvenile double het E. carinata tomorrow and I was just curious about a few things.

-How fast do they grow? I'd imagine pretty fast...
-When do they start their color change?
- I've read that they prefer cooler temperature but I couldn't find a concrete number- how warm should my warm side be? My room temperature is 75.

That's it for now, but I'll probably be posting pictures soon.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

I bet you knew I'd have to respond to you .

Mine were at about 3 feet in one year and about 5 feet in two years on a moderate feeding regime (1-2 prey items per feeding about every 7 days).

>>-When do they start their color change?

They start it very early on but it starts to get especially noticeable at about 6 months. First the black comes in, then the browner areas start to yellow up. By 18 months to 2 years the change is complete.

>>- I've read that they prefer cooler temperature but I couldn't find a concrete number- how warm should my warm side be? My room temperature is 75.

My room is 75-78 ambient. However they do have access to heat tape that provides a hot spot about 8-10 degrees warmer and they use it!

Congrats! As you know I love King Rats!

He could at least have sent us a matching pair, now we can't even wear them!

Boy, took me a while to understand that comment - must be slow today. So he sent you the carinata in socks?

Yes, rather clean ones I might add. Big athletic socks seem like good stand-ins for snake bags for little snakes, the end ties up pretty easily, and they breathe well if you believe the packages!
I'll keep you updated, the male seems like a very nervous little fellow.
