Need input on feeding

Noodle_Boy Nov 10, 2003 08:13 PM

Okay, I'm trying to find a nice median on mealies to feed my leo. My main concern here is obesity, so I want to make sure of that. I know that leos will eat as long as they're hungry, but I know they, like humans.. have been known to over eat.

So okay, when I got him he went 2 days without eating any mealies. I chalk that up to post travel stress. After those 2 days I put 7 new worms in his dish, and he ate 5. The day after that I put 11 worms in the dish and he ate them all. Then the next day, he ate 4 worms from my hand, then 4 later that night from his dish for a total of 8. Today he just finished eating 10 from my hand. I was thinking about placing 10 in his dish per night, and was just looking for feedback on that quantity. Thanks =)

Since your little leo is just a baby, go ahead and let him/her eat all it wants. It's growing, and will use it.
If the mealies are medium sized, 10 sounds fine. Mine was eating close to 10 per day, but when I got big ones (they're sooo much larger) she's down to 4-5 per night. I just put 6 or 7 of the big ones in at dinner time and let her her eat all she wants. the next morning I take the leftovers out and that night I add another 6 or 7.

Thanks for the input.

LoL, can't believe I forgot to say how old he is. Right now he's 3 months and 1 week old. And yes I'm feeding him medium sized mealies. How old was your leo when you starting feeding large sized mealies?

She's getting close to 3 months old now. Full sized mealies are fine for her. She loves them. They're only 1" long full grown, but these ones are a lot bigger around than the medium sized ones i had (like twice the size). She has no problem eating them and I just switched her over a week ago.

I had her on crickets when I first got her, because that's what the breeder fed. But after reading a lot on mealies and asking questions here, I decided it was a good idea to change. I don't get to see the little tail flicks anymore when she goes hunting, but she'll get the occasional cricket for variety and then I can watch her hunt and flick and pounce.

The local pet store here sells 'large mealworms' that I suspect are actually superworms. They're HUGE. But the ones I have now i got through the mail and are truly large mealies.

I'm done rambling...
