Are snakes addicting?

Smuffin Nov 10, 2003 09:38 PM

I started with one snake for my 11 year old son and now I have 7 snakes. I am addicited to them. It is like I want more and more. One of each kind. These are amazing creatures and I am so excited. Gee does it get to a stopping point or is every one that have snakes want more and more??? Do you think I will get tired of them???

haha .. yes they are addicting. Here's what you should do if you want " one of each" Get a blizzard and a ghost - a pair.
Breed them and you will have a clutch of babies that are het for almost everything. Breed these offspring to each other and back to the parents and you'll just about a dozen of " each".

I'm addicted!! I have 2 corns and a milk and am looking into a 'small' boa or python or maybe a trans-pecos rat. Only problem is where to house them all. We have a decent size house with 3 bedrooms, living, kitchen. And can you house more then one per enclosure!!

I bought an amel for my 5 year old daughter about 1.5 years ago. She had to beg for a long time. I reluctantly gave in. Now I just bought my third corn and can't wait for the next. I think all that will stop me is the mounting mouse bill. Even my wife helped pick out the latest one. I feel like a little kid!

DemonFrog Nov 11, 2003 06:23 AM

so there is hope that i will still get a corn.
and yes they are addictive, i have 2 dekay's and now i want to breed them and get some rat snakes and some boas and some pythons etc......I need a job, being 16 sucks
anyway bottom line, ask almost anyone and they will say they want more snakes? what is it with us?
Demon
BTW these are my babies.

then you can have many more snakes for about the same money that you are spending on mice in petshops.

I started with my anery corn on October 4th and now I'm up to 4 corns the last two coming in last Tuesday (two BEAUTIFUL amels). Ok so I'm still not satisfied...I want more, yep one of each (well almost). So I'm going to get rid of my extra set of couches in my front room and build a rack. I thought my PDF's were going to be addicting, but nope, corns beat them. I still love my PDF's (I only have one set of three D. tincs) which I plan on breeding if possible, but I think I'm going to save the rest of the room in my house for corns. I would love to breed Blizzards and a few others down the road. Already thinking of breeding rats to feed my growing family.

Someone stop me or I'm going to be covered in snakes like that pic on the back of Kathy Love's Corn Snake Manual.

I find snakes to be very addictive. My wife got her first Ball Python, and I got my first snow corn Three years ago. We are now up to 22, and thinking about what to get next. We currently have 9 corns, 8 ball pythons, 2 texas rats, 2 dumeril's boas, 1 columbian red tail boa, 2 iguanas, and 1 leopard gecko. I don't think you ever get tired of them, but you do get to the point where you can't handle them as much as you would like. You start to get your favorites and the others only seem to get held on occasion. Time gets to be a little hard to come by. My wife was up until almost 4 oclock last night feeding, and still didn,t get to all of them. Aint it great.

We had three cats when I got a Chinese water dragon and my family said, "she's off her rocker". Then I got a yearling(? she was big, but not full grown) snow corn (Ruby). They all thought i'd completely lost it.
then came an Okeetee, and an amel and anery, a couple bloodreds, an anery stripe and a candycane. After breeding one pair last year and selling some of those babies, I went from one to 11 cornsnakes in just under 1 year.

I can see the maintanece getting old in a large collection, but I can't imagine ever getting tired of my snakes!

I also got a friend addicted by selling him two of my babies and their dad. My nephew and my friends son are both happy new cornsnake addicts too thanks to their birthday presents from me

The addiction spreads.........lol

This azsuboc other half.

Its very addicting weve been saying no more snakes for years. Were now at around 40 snakes maybe even more. We have a wide variety of corns and we still get more, a good varity of kings, subocs, two pair or red bulls. But yet we still keep getting more. Taiwains (sp?) were recently added. And blues will be added this week. So yes I think it is addicting, actually Im sure it is. We sure cant seem to stop.

Smuffin Nov 13, 2003 06:36 AM

Do you have a pic of the rack you built?? What did you make it out of? Thanks for everybody's post. At least I feel better knowing that I am not the only one that has this wonderful addition. lol
These are what I have so far:
Albino Black rat
Okeetee Corn
Amel Reverse Okeetee
Carmel Corn
Normal Corn
Ghost Corn
Ball Python

Hotshot Nov 13, 2003 10:00 AM

I built it out of 3/4" plywood. If I had it to do over again, I would use the material that Lowes has for shelving projects. It is the nice smooth stuff. I think it is melamine? Not sure though.

I will post a pic this afternoon of the rack system for ya.

I started with a wild caught garter about 4 years ago. Then a BP....then we went to a show and I got another BP and a corn snake. Now, I want a snow corn to go with my albino, and I ALMOST bought a Solomon Island Ground Boa last night when I went to pick up feeders at our local reptile place. Sigh.....I keep telling myself, no more until we move into a house of our own (we rent currently), but it's almost a compulsion. My husband is in on it (he wants a Hognose) and the kids are in on it, and I have a LOOOOOOONNNGGG list of future wants. It's just terrible!

How many of us who are addicted are also planning on breeding our collection? I certainly do. It doesn't appear that the cornsnake will be facing extinction any time soon. This is an exciting hobby and attracts more and more as we share our enthusium and facination with friends and neighbors. I am always pleasantly surprised when someone who I respect and admire will share with me their love for reptiles. And what a surprise it was to discover so many women (like me) are keeping snakes as pets. I thought only men kept snakes as some sort of macho thing. I believe it's all because of the cornsnake. They are certainly the "people charmers" of the world. What a dull place this would be without them.

Kikai Nov 14, 2003 10:13 AM

Oh, yeah! My 2nd BP was a female exactly for that purpose. To raise her and eventually breed her to my big, fat male. I'm sure I'll be doing the same with my corn. Speedy (our albino corn) is getting bigger, and he's way easier to care for than the BP. Never had a bad shed, never refused a meal, personable and colorful. I'm in big trouble. Heh heh heh.... And you are right, there are more women in this hobby than I originally anticipated, and from all walks of life. I just love it!
