Why does he sit there with his mouth open?

jakeleolizard Nov 10, 2003 09:40 PM

Hi all,

It has been 3 weeks now that I have had my new collared lizard... and bad me... I still do not know what to name him... although, I keep on leaning towards Dexter... he is funny... makes me laugh... and is quarky... but anyhoo... for the first time tonight... I saw him just sitting there basking and had his mouth open like he was panting like a dog... is this normal for collareds? It seems like a lot of pictures of them show them doing this... but this is the first time I have seen him do it so was wondering...

He seems very happy now that I have a rock hiding space for him... and I have lots of climbing opportunities in his cage along with multiple ways of regulating his temp...

He was such a spaz tonight.... I took him out and held him and let him run around on the floor and then hand fed him... put him back in his cage and he turned in for the night... now he is sleeping.... does anyone elses collared do the same sort of thing? Maybe he was just wanting food and that is why he was such a spaz.... and once he got it... he was a happy camper.... any ideas?

Peace.

JIM

by opening their mouth, yes, like the way a Dog pants to cool himself, same concept. They all do it, very normal !
I let my guys run all the time, they love it and seem to get tamer faster, I think when let out. Just sit on the floor while hes out, and he will soon trust you and hop on you all the time, sometimes they jump in your hand and lay flat like they are resting, very cool !!! Have Fun !! Eve

That is funny... It is weird how he just now did it... must have been feeling lazy I guess and didn't want to move from his basking light... funny.
