I'm having trouble with my heating again for Orion. It takes 5 hrs. to reach 90 degrees. He spends more time just trying to heat up than out running around his cage. I'm afraid this can give him a problem digesting too. I have a under-tank heater on the hide side but it's about 5 yrs. old. Maybe I need a new one? I have been thinking about getting a cobra mat to see how fast that heats up.

How big is the UTH?? maybe you need a larger one...try getting the 60 gallon ones. What wattage bulb are you using?? try an increase in the wattage...What kind of top is on your cage? If it is wire then maybe try using a closed one which will keep in heat. If this doesnt help be really specific to the setup you have and i as well as others i am sure will try and help you.
Good luck!

I have a 3' Vision cage with 125 watts flood bulb and a under tank pad on the other side. The lights went on at 7am he came out of his cave at 10am but only walked an inch or too and went back to sleep. the temp. is 88.

i had a 3' vision also the one that is 36" long, 21" wide and 18" high, i used a 150 watt bulb...really if the temperatures do get up to the correc temperature and all i wouldnt worry about it too much, also use the 60 gallon uth this should work. If you just gt him he still might be acclimating PLUS it is their brumation time. My male hasnt come out much if at all and my female is sleeping alot too right now.
Good luck

My apartment is about 70-72 degrees. I think the UTH is shot. I'm thinking about getting a Cobra one.

Hi,
I have a 4.5' long tank and I use 2 150W zoomed floodlights and it keeps it hot enough. I read you shouldn't use uth's, but I don't know why...I would recommend 2 lights (maybe 150 and 100 "basking" lights) just because cobra heat mats are pretty expensive, but do what you think is best for the size tank you have

I tried a hair dryer and it brought the temp from 80 to 93 quickly and stays like that all day. I did that on a couple of cold days and it worked. To day I didn't need to. It didn't seem to hurt Orion and he practically perked up right away instead of being sluggish most of the day.

That seems so strange that you can't get the temps up. I have a large (80gal) glass open top cage, which should be much harder to heat than a Vision. I thought those were supposed to retain heat really well. I have two lamps - Zoo-Med basking lights (one 150w, the other 50w) - and no UTH at all.

My anole tank is a 29 gallon that gets warmer than your Vision if I use a 50w Zoo-Med. I had to switch to a conventional incandescent because it was too hot.

Is the room really large? Or is there a fan or vent nearby that could be forcing the heat to escape? My cages are in one small room that stays 80-85 degrees during the day.
