Parasites/worms and cornsnakes

Passport Nov 11, 2003 07:57 AM

How many of you are regularly deworming and checking fecal droppings for worms? What is the easiest method to use to remove parasites from a cornsnake? I have a bunch of snakes and it would be quite expensive to take each one to the vet. I've not read much about this subject here. What is the dewormer of choice to use? And how do you administer to the animal? I use Panacur to deworm my tortoises and they eat it right up. Can this product be used in cornsnakes also? Is it possible to hide it inside a food item and let them swallow it this way? Would appreciate any commments and suggestions.

"Understanding Reptile Parasites" by Roger Klingenberg is a great little book to get familiar with parasites and thier commen treatments/dosages. I usually get at least a fecal smear or float with every new snake that comes in. My vet does not require that I make an appointment, I just drop it off and they test it for around $20. Even if nothing is found, I still quarntine the snake for at least 6 months and if anything is different at all, I have another fecal done. I find that doing it gradually (testing all the new snakes) is easier on the pocket book than bringing in a sample for everyone at once.
