Fecal Floatation Supplies?? Where to Buy?

LeosAnonymous Nov 11, 2003 09:45 AM

I just got a microscope in yesterday and am having the hardest time finding any supplies to perform fecals locally.

I'm wondering where you guys get your supplies from.

I need:

1) Fecasol

2) Some type of stain

3) Appropriately sized vails

4) Slides and cover slips

5) Anything else I'm forgetting

If anyone knows a good place to buy these supplies online that would be great. And if anyone can give me any recommendations on how I might aquire some of these supplies locally I would also be greatly appreciative.

I make my own flotation solution... its a bit messy/sticky, but very easy and cheap to make.
Boil some water, let it cool for 5 mins, then stir in as much sugar as will dissolve- it needs quite alot! Let it cool and its ready to use.
I live in the UK, so I can't advise on where you could get everything else from.

Best wishes,
Pauline

Ross,
You can buy Fecasol from any veterinary supply house. Just do a search on "Fecasol". Most of them carry the Fecalyzer kits, too. They work very well. That eliminates the need for test tubes, etc.

As far as stain goes, just go to any drugstore and order some Lugols Solution. It is a strong iodine solution and it works great for staining fecal floats. I just add 5 drops of Lugol's to a Fecalyzer and then float it.

For slides and coverslips, try someplace like Lab Essentials
