UVB lighting; 5 years or 5 months?

ortred Nov 11, 2003 10:15 AM

As I further my research for Bearded Dragon accessories, I have found some conflicting data. Some of those expensive UVB lights (bulb or tube) say they will last up to five years, but then I have heard from BD owners that you have to replace them every five to six months because they loose their UVB potency. Is this right? If so, why make a long-lived lighting source that’s short-lived effective?

Thanks,
Jason

Good thing you asked, I'm afraid that many keep UVB bulbs thinking since it's emitting light still, it's emiting UVB. Beautiful Dragons has done extensive UVB tests. (Link is below) They lose their potency quickly --- the most common UVB bulb, Reptisun 5.0. With an initial initial strength of 49 to 59uW/cm2, measured at 3", between 5 and 10 uW/cm2 were lost within 8 weeks, respectively.
