Water or land?

spycspider Nov 11, 2003 11:18 AM

Hi,

Quick question (probably repeated many times before..sorry). Having read the benefits of a large enclosure, I'm planning to set up a BIG aquarium for my bullfrog. Should it be mostly water or half land half water? I know they're pretty aquatic but I want to prevent bugs from drowning too easily when I feed the frog.

Thanks.

Johnny

My experience with bullfrog, he poos and urinates a LOT, and I feel uncomfortable with the half water-half land setup. I use a large shallow bowel (a plastic water catcher used for potted plants which is both inexpensive and easy to clean) and change the water DAILY, and I do mean seven-days-a-week.

No amount of filtration can replace fresh water. And trust me a bullfrog *is* messy.

You need a one-hundred gallon container PER bullfrog.

Personally, with correct filtration, I would go with the half land half water with a VERY deep water area. When you encounter bullfrogs, the first thing they do is jump in the water. Even with my african bullfrogs and horned frogs I try to create a half water/half land set up. It is not that had if you partition the water off so no substrate can get in (or just minimal amounts) and you have a good filtration system (Canister filters work well and are expensive, but if you are already buying a large tank then it would be worth it). After that, partial water changes need to be done every few days, but the frog will definitely appreciate it. Andy

It seems my bullfrog goes all out of his way to make the water messy. Then again I use strictly Bed-A-Beast because it's safe substrate. Bed-a-beast gets in the water quite liberally no matter how you partition the land/water and no amount of filtration can get rid of the black water after one day of play.
Plus HUGE bowel movements. Big chunks of poo. well, he is a big frog.

I prefer to change a shallow bowel daily, and he does like to soak in there.

Even my pacman likes this setup. He just jumps in and out of the shallow bowel and soaks. It's easy to keep that water clean too.

There is no problem with the water turning brown from the bed-a-beast.

My big guy is in a 125 gal. he is set up half water half land. he seems to really love staying in the deep end of his water. i change it every two to three days even with the filter but it only takes about ten minutes and he seems to enjoy it just like that.
