Question about 75 gallon aquarium and breeding

JLJ2018 Nov 11, 2003 11:53 AM

I currently have a 75 gallon aquarium that's being used for fish. I'm kind of faced with a dilemma here though. I've got it up for sale right now but am thinking I might want to hold onto it. Here's why.

I have a 14 inch BP but am thinking of getting a mate for it. I'm thinking of putting a divider of some sort into the 75 and put the two BP's in it, one on each side. My only thoughts are that a divided 75 might not be enough room for two adult BP's and would have to take the divider out. I've read that it's not good to house BP's together when trying to breed, is that right?

A 75 gallon sounds big, but it's really not too much bigger than a 55...the extra space is just a few more inches in depth and width, with some of it being in height.

Just trying to figure out what's best...

Most 75gal tanks are 48" long and 18" wide. My favorite size for fish. But I don't think that 24"X18" or half is large enough for an adult ball python. An adult ball python would look fabulous in the entire tank, however. One should never get rid of an aquarium when one keeps any kind of animals. You can always use it for something else. Just think of the display you could make in a tank that size. I use two reptile/screen top 75gal tanks in my reptile house. Presently they are occupied at night only by tortoises that can't tolerate the nighttime drop in temp's outside.

Yeah I know, but since we had a baby I'm very cramped for space, which is why I thought of putting the divider in until they're grown, then taking it out and letting the two adults co-habitate in the entire area.

It's either that or I need to sell it and use the space to build a shelf system that will hold two seperate tanks for two adults.

Well, actually the two 75gal in my reptile house are stacked. A friend of mine built a stack stand so I could use one space for both of them. It works well and saves space. So you might consider that and build that instead of a rack system. Divided would probably suffice for smaller ball pythons. Just remember that they don't stay small for long. And they do need to thermoregulate. And two feet doesn't allow for much distance between warm and cool. Like you, I'm always rearranging things in my mind and trying to make room for more. Good luck.

Then I guess I need to keep trying to sell it. Thanks for your input...would love to hear from other people that have bred BP's too.

Ummmm, not something I could ship. It's HUGE and has a big cherry wood base and canopy to it.
