RETF and its noctural habits

chameleoncrow Nov 11, 2003 01:17 PM

sorry for the multitude of RETf questiosn i been posting lately.
I'm doing my research before aquire some.

Anyway, Since RETF are nocturnal, and most of the time we(humans) only sleep late at nite, which leads to our lights being on most of the time, would that disrupt the RETF's Noctunal habits?

Or are they like chameleons, as in the they react to their cage lights ( if you put them of, the chameleons go to sleep, regardless if there are otehrt sources of light in the room)? If they are like my chameleons, then the RETF would be wide awake when i put of their lights at 8 p.m, am i correct?

If they don't react to their cage light, and react more to the brightness of the room, then does this mean i have to keep them in a seperate room, or is there another way?

thanks in advance to all your help

I think chameleons will react to room light, too, especially flourescents. However, at least my Veiled would fall asleep at 6 or 7 even if the sun was still out, so I just think with chams it's more a matter of habit than anything.

Anyway, most treefrogs I've kept will respond more to the light in their cage or to habit than anything and aren't disturbed by something like dim lights across the room. RETFs are totally different, though. They don't seem bothered by it, but if a light stays on they'll never wake up or only be up briefly to take a dip and maybe, just maybe, eat something. That will vary between individuals and the exact situation you're talking about, but RETFs need to be in a room that's dark and quite all night for them to thrive more than other frogs. People complain about never seeing them up and whatnot because of this. That said, you could also adjust the hours your frogs are awake or asleep. If they're captive bred, I mean, you could arrange their nightime to be from 12 AM to 8 AM, as long as there isn't sunlight being let into the room until after 8. Also, since they're from a tropical region, and I'm assuming most of us here are not, they get less dark hours than we do so it isn't hard to do this at all.
