How important is it for leos to have defined day/night periods?

ifni May 30, 2003 11:00 PM

We're still trying to get our tank set up just right, and without the heat lamp, we're having trouble getting the warm end warm enough with just the reptile heating pad under the aquarium. So I was wondering, would it be okay to have the lamp on all the time, or would it stress out the geckos, or make them lethargic?

Any advice much appreciated

I believe it not only tells them when to wake up and when to sleep, but it helps them realize what season it is. Summer days are longer than winter days.

You could try a dark red bulb or blacklight. Those shouldn't bother them too much. My blacklight is on the thermostat on the GeckoCam below so at night sometimes it's pitch black and sometimes it's bluish/purple. Pip, the gecko, doesn't seem to mind one bit.

Besides the red and black lights, there are also bulbs that simulate moonlight. I have used all three, and I really like the moonlight bulbs. They provide the same amount of heat, and I thought they made things look more natural.

That's what I have. It's made by Exo Terra and is called a Night Glo Terrarium Moonlight Lamp. It's 75w and seems to work well. I thought it was a blacklight. It looks like one, but I guess it's not as purple and doesn't make things glow as much.
