cosidering the frilled dragon

ch23119 Nov 11, 2003 02:42 PM

I have quite a collection of reptiles like snappers, bearded dragons, leopard and fat-tail geckos, etc. since I was eight and I am amazed with the frillies because it isn't the ordinary, everyday lizard. I am reay to pay the big bucks but would like to know anything important before I get one. Because I work in a pet store, i see too many people not know enough about their animals and it is really quite sad, so I would like to know everything I can to make sure this is something I would like and can handle.
Any info dealing with temperature, laws, reagulations, permits, liscenses in Ohio or U.S. to keep them, a good feeding schedule, cage size requirements, cage set-up, costs to buy a single juvi today, etc. Anything is appreciated and I believe that everyone has their own opinions and experience is the best way not to fail. Thanks
Chris

TEMPERATURE- 100-110 basking
PERMIT- I know you need one in NJ but its really easy to get
FEEDING- every day is best w/calcium
CAGE- Vertical. They are arboreal lizards. tank>100gal ideally(smaller for juvies)Need humidity
COST-Average $150 from the internet. I paid $275 from a petstore :O

Hi,

My brother and I are also considering Frilleds and have done some research in the past two months. It's hard coz there aren't that many good care sheets available - they seem to be all similar

I haven't stumbled across any law or regulation that restricts people in the US from keeping frilleds - I remember checking on that coz I'm from California and a lot of things are restricted here I don't even know why....

With cage requirements, I read that we need a 4ft x 3ft x 3ft cage, which is what my brother is planning to build. We don't plan to get the frilled til the middle of this coming summer. He's just planning to make it a little bigger (5ft x 3.5ft x 3.5ft) - it'll pretty much be built with wood, but one of the walls will be half glass window, half screen (screen = door). We're doing this to keep a lot of the heat in since frilleds need 100-110F (window-side/basking) - and the cooler end will be ventilated with the screen and be around 90-96F.

I saw a single juvi online for about $150. There aren't any in the pet stores around my house - just beardies, leos, anoles, and such.

but good luck N let me know how it goes for my future frilled! take care
