OT but where is everyone from?

shortydsm Nov 11, 2003 02:51 PM

I was just curious... I am in Reno, NV but I am from northern CA, near Sacramento. The only reason I am here is for college (Univ of NV) & I have 6 months left to go, yay! It's freeeeeeeezing here right now.

I'm also from western Oregon, though I live in Salem. I did live in Eugene for 4-5 years, though. And I lived in Pensacola, FL, for almost 2 years, which was fun because the green anoles were everywhere!

I'm from the Netherlands, Europe.

Where in the Netherlands do you live? My roommate in college is from Sasenheim, though she lives here now. I've visited there as well as Amsterdam, den Haag, Scheveningen, and Leiden. I think Leiden was my favorite - I loved it there.

sigh...It'll be forever before I get another chance to visit.

I'm in Miami, it's also mentioned down below.

Anyway, it's freezing in Reno? I figured Nevada was mostly hot, even though I haven't a clue where in Nevada Reno is. I'd like to go to Reno, I'd probably understand more jokes in Reno 911 and I sure would like that!

Yea that Reno 911 show is pretty funny, it basically depicts Reno as being really trashy & stupid, which is sort of true. Hey, I can say that, I am not from here, this is only temporary. Though that show is filmed in Los Angeles County, not here.

About the weather, there are only 2 seasons here: really hot & really cold. Las Vegas is always pretty warm though, but that is pure desert... here we are 1.8 miles away from the base of the Sierras & already at 4500ft elevation. We get snow, sleet & rain. It has been snowing on & off since the week before Halloween, I hate it!!!!

Haha, yes, I love Reno 911. They are too freaking hilarious. I mean, I understand the cop jokes, I just didn't know if I was missing and Reno, Nevada jokes along the way.

Whoa, it's that cold there? It's still mid-80s here during the day. I like to stick way down here in South Florida, though, I lived in Daytona and the winters were unbearable for me when temps got into the teens! My roommates were from Wisconsin and got a kick out of me wearing a ski jacket and ski gloves, daily, in 35-degree weather. It was hilarious... for them, I was freaking COLD!!!

...I forgot to mention we are 25 mins away from Lake Tahoe. Don't come to Reno to visit unless you like nature (The Sierras, Tahoe, etc) if you want ot party & go gambling, spend a little more $ and go to Vegas, it's 10x bigger & better.

I didn't see anywhere below that you are in Miami? I have been to Orlando before (last summer actually) & there were anoles everywhere. I remember laying out by the pool & there'd be 2-3 sitting with me on my loungechair! Very cool, I loved it!

Hah, I'd like to go to Vegas, but just for food. I don't think it'll be my type of town except for the fact that I LOVE to eat good food. And I love nature, but I'm not sure what I'd find at Lake Tahoe. Anything interesting?

Ah, Orlando... Orlando is just a hell hole to me. My boyfriend lived there for a year and hated every second of it, especially when the "love bugs" came out in Spring. That, and it was always dry, winters are cold, there's no beach, the people are mostly white trash, the cops are racist bastards, the cops also hate anyone from Miami, practically everyone's on drugs, again, there's no beach, and the list goes on and on. I liked Orlando when I just drove through it, but I eventually had so many bad experiences there that I hate the place to death! Oh, and the crackheads... Uggh, at least in Miami those areas are practically sectioned off and full of cops. Orlando's crackheads just wander the corner like dazed zombies looking for cash, I hate it!

Okay, you can tell I don't like Orlando.. but, yeah, anoles... Florida's got lots and lots of anoles.

Arlington Heights, IL. It's outside of Chicago (thank God, I never liked it there).

cheshireycat Nov 13, 2003 07:53 AM

Ah, Chicago... the smoggy city, eh?

There's a Pixies song called "Born in Chicago," and this is how it goes:

I was born in Chicago in 1971
I was born in Chicago in 1971
What my father told me,
"Son, you had better get a gun."

My first friend went down
When I was 16 years old
Oh my first friend went down
When I was 16 years old
There's one thing I can say about that boy
He gotta go

My second friend went down
When I was 17 years of age
Oh my second friend went down
When I was 17 years of age
There's one thing I can say about that boy
He gotta pray

Oh life is a lie
If you don't know how to play the game
Oh life is a lie
If you don't know how to play the game
All my friends are going
And everything's gonna stay the same

Sorry, I had to include it. My ex-roommates came from Wisconsin, just North of Chicago, and they said it was pretty dangerous in certain parts, like any city, just worse. Other than that, I just hear it's horribly, horribly grey. People tell me it's gotten better, but my boyfriend was appalled when he had to stop there for a few hours, and his favorite color is grey. What do you think?

It can be grey but I will say this, Chicago has one of the most beautiful lakefronts of any city, that is if you can find a place to walk. Can you say C R O W D E D ? Way too many people for me.

Denver, Colorado here (Well close anyways, one of the large burbs).

I love Colorado, it's absolutely beautiful in the mountains (don't care for out east, all looks like Kansas to me). And NO not everyone who lives in Colorado goes skiing, I've havn't been since I was 8 years old (I'm now 28) and never cared for it then. Give me hiking, camping, exploring old mines (yes I know it's dangerous that's why it's fun), horseback riding etc. I was the girl who grew up never scared of snakes or reptiles (we have rattlesnakes and bull snakes out here) and would pick up just about anything living or dead to figure out what it was.

San Diego, CA here.

Definitely no anoles running around here...but there are alligator lizards, horned toads, rattlesnakes, kingsnakes, rosy boas, etc.

Lots of wildlife...that's for sure.

I am originally from SD & plan to return there after I graduate college in exactly 6 months.

Are the wildfires still burning??? I don't have cable right now so I am not in tune with the world news.

Sorry for the delayed response. The wildfires are definitely all put out by now...(thankfully).

I'm almost out of college too...this is my last year. Glad to hear you're coming back to join your fellow San Diegans again...SD needs more herp enthusiasts.
