How long before I worry?

chimbakka Nov 11, 2003 03:17 PM

I took Orion to the vet a few weeks ago. I posted it all on here... so some of you probably know what I'm worried about.
She was bred on Sept 17th, and has still not layed. The vet took x-rays and saw some eggs, but said that they were not fully developed. I saw some stuff that looked like eggs in a different spot (where he pointed was higher up) but I don't know... they were probably just organs or something. She was weighed at 83g. He said that her bones are well calcified and everything, and that she looks good. He suggested elongating the photoperiod by a half hour a week until she is up to 14 hours of light per day. He said that they can slow production if they sense winter coming and can hold eggs over until spring.
Orion is still eating, drinking, and pooping well. The vet said to come back if she starts to shake when she walks, looks dehydrated, gets really skinny, or changes her behaviour in a dramatic way. How long can she stay gravid for and have HEALTHY eggs, and stay HEALTHY herself? I am getting worried about her.
Also, can anyone else who has had x-rays done tell me/show me where the eggs would be found? Thanks a ton!

Eggs in a veiled from what I've seen are kinda stored up in the high rear area, like from the back of her kinda up into her spine a bit. It's hard to tell, but I just remember them being higher than I thought. How old is your girl? My girl was about 10 months old and weighed 112 grams when she laid her first clutch, and it was about a month after breeding. She was pretty big for her age also. She laid 43, which for a veiled isn't really alot. I don't know what to tell you with the "being worried" situation, since with breeding, everything is still so far from being mastered (at least by me for sure). I have a few female panthers that should have laid their second clutches a long time ago but haven't. Now they're showing receptive colors and waiting to be bred again. Sometimes I just never know what to do. At the weight you said, I wouldn't worry yet. They can get pretty darn big before laying and you'll know it if it's getting to be too bad. If she looks good, acts good, eats and drinks good, then I wouldn't worry about it. If she begins crawling or digging, then give her the chance to lay.
