Mealworm Questions

bxherp Nov 11, 2003 04:17 PM

Hey everyone... I recently purchase several leopard geckos so I have a bin full of about a 1000 mealworms. Now being a snake guy I don't know much about mealworms. However, I think some of the mealworms are turning into beetles. I know the mealworms can't crawl out of the bin but can beetles climb out? Thanks for any answers you can give me.-ELvy

If the mealworms can't crawl out of the container, neither can your beetles. They don't fly either.

I can't speak from a breeder perspective, but I can share what I've seen. Each year I give my students a small container with a couple mealworms. (Their own individual "pets" -- don't laugh, it has great results!! <g> The darkling beetles do fly. Not often, and not well (easily caught by special needs kids) but they do spread their wings and take off occasionally.

I don't know if this is helpful to you or not..... it seems like mealworm breeders are not seeing this in their own colonies but I thought I'd chime in with my experiences.
