Mixing whites treefrogs with Oriental firebellied toads. Colchicine, Lukeybaby etc please read!

Hi everyone,
Unfortunately there is a dilemma on the forum I normally visit:

http://www.livefood.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=all;action=display;num=1068496475

I have asked the keepers to post the question here, yet he has not done so so far. Please may people post their responses to mixing whites and fire bellied toads here and I will paste them onto our forum. There are unfortunately not enough experienced amphibian owners there to convince him otherwise.

Please help! It is a simple case of overcoming arrogance on his behalf, and I would hate to see another keeper own herps in this irresponsible manner. Thank you very much in advance, unfortunately it must be topic specific (his demands not mine)

Hey,

Like most people are probably thinking that is a super bad idea.
1. Whites will eat anything they can get in their mouths this has included lizards, other frogs, bats, insects etc.
2. As many people have pointed out on other forums FBT's have toxins, if injested by whites will kill them.
3. These animals also require different care, since they come from 2 different parts of the world, and have different needs.
4. Just because one or two people say they have done it and it has worked means nothing, its not a good idea to mix any of these animals. Plus in my opinion FBT's require much less room than whites just go buy a rubbermaid container drill holes and keep the FBT's in there. It costs what 4$ extra? Since FBT's live on the ground all you need is a decent amount of floor space. I keep min in a rubber maid and it works great. For my whites I have a very tall aquarium to suit their needs!

Hope this helps
Kristen

Whay Kristen points out is very true. Bombina orientalis is from a temperate climate, where there are more seasonal changes; on the other hand, Litoria caerulea is distributed in areas that experience only wet and dry seasons. In addition, they are avid climbers unlike FBT's who like to spend more time in the water. One or the other will certainly outcompete its tankmate. Don't always do what is convenient... do what is appropriate.

I read those posts and the person who's been doing that for "5 years" is being irresponsible and ridiculous, and I don't think they're going to change. I think they're lying, first off, about how long they've had that going on successfully and I think they're ignoring possible problems that could be there. Also, I don't think they realize that for every one of them there are 20 people who killed their frogs by doing the same thing.

Honestly, those pets probably died centuries ago and she's just keeping the story alive for none to know the better!

Thank you. WHilst it does not appear to have much affect, hopefully it will be agreater lesson to others who read the forum. Unfortunately, as you saw those people were the vast minority, and that (usually) well natured forum got a bit hectic over it!

Thank you again. It is nice to see so much support, and thanks bgkast for posting. That really helped a lot of us brits who aren't quite as much in the know as you lot!

Thanks again,
Rob
