Unique habit of children python

earthpig23 Nov 11, 2003 07:26 PM

I bought a childrens python about 6 months ago. I decided instead of just feeding him in the cage and letting him associate opening the cage with food and taking a bite of my hand i would try something new. I would hold him prior to feeding then put the pinky in his cage while out then place him in the cage so he can get his food. My theory is that he would like to be held cause it meant food.
Anywasys one day he decided to grab his prey while still wrapped around my finger. I decided to show my wife the next time he ate and he did it again. Now he wont even give the food a second thought unless he is wrapped aroung my finger.
Its quite funny. Does anyone else have a snake that does this?

Great picture! My male would do the same thing when he was younger except that he would wrap his tail around my finger and snag the pink mouse as I lowered him into the feeding box. At first he would constrict and then eat it in mid-air. Now he's older; I put him in the feed box and offer him pink or fuzzy rats on tongs. He coils the food item and wraps his tail around the tongs as soon as I release the food for him--pretty wild!

thanx for the reply..its nice to know im not the only silly one. He seems to enjoy it and actually he prefers to go to me when being handled rather than anyone else..needless to say he's our baby.

Don't know about Childrens Pythons, but my Carpets will all do this.

It was an accidental beginning. I was holding my first baby as I was getting the pinky ready and she just reached over and gently took it. I still like to be a big part of the feed. Wether she is wrapped around my hand, sitting in my lap or on the floor beside me.

All my babies will feed happily curled around my hand/finger or with me holding or touching them, interferance of any kind by me doesn't stop them eating or disturb them.

I might have to rethink the methods though when they grow larger. Haven't had any accidents yet, but I don't want to be on the receiving side of an accident when they are adult.
