my girl is dead

compasscreek Nov 11, 2003 07:37 PM

apparently the stress from being egg bound and the "C" section she had yesterday in an attemt to save her was just too much. my wife had been watching and caring for lily all day. about 3 pm she called and said lily is moving very little if at all and is unreponsive. i got home about 5pm to find her eyes sunken in and a pale orange and black. i touched her and she to make sure and she was cold and dead. we are pretty disappointed, she is definatiely my favorite. i gotta find me a "lilytoo" now.

Dennis-

Sorry to hear the bad news. The eggs that were removed were they all a uniformed shape and well calcified? Also how many holes did she dig, and how deep were they, and how long of a period was she digging for? Best wishes!

john the eggs all are bright white and are a bit soft(kind of like a grape)but firm, if that makes any sense. she dug about 4 or 5 holes, most were about 4 or 5 inches deep. the last one she dug was probaby 10 inches deep. all the holes she dug were in the same spot too. she was digging for about 4 days. i'm down but not out i'll just get another nosey girl.

i'm thinking my main problem was her nutrition and supplementation...or lack of for being gravid. i am definately wiser now.

The same thing happened to my Veiled (Lelo) when she tried to lay a second clutch with sperm retained from the first clutch.
She became eggbound (we had x-rays) and stayed that way acting and eating normally for over six months before she died. We opted not to get the c section since most of them don't make it after that procedure. We hoped instead she would lay the eggs, which actually she did about 3 days before she died. The stress of being eggbound that long was too much for her.
I wish you better luck with the next one.

we are so sorry!

Jade just become gravid, and we've been scared it's going to be hard on her. She was a rescue from a pet store, and she was just getting to be in perfect health when she became gravid. Now she won't drink, eats a whole lot less, and by the time she goes to the feeder cup, all the dust is off the crickets .... we're really worried about her.

were her eggs infertile? or was she mated?

and I'm sorry to hear it happened to your cham. I acquired mine about a week before she started laying. She laid about 21 eggs and we extracted another 26 after she died. My vet thinks it was a combination of improper nutrition (not enough calcium) and the fact that she was moved just one week prior to laying.
At any rate, the eggs are still incubating, and with lots of luck, we'll have her babies hatch sometime between now and Feb.
My condolences to you, I wish you well with her eggs.
