Feeding Idea I Had

LNMS Nov 11, 2003 08:42 PM

I've heard from a lot of sources that insects are good for cresties to have sometimes, instead of just babyfood or CG Diet by T-Rex. What about adding freeze dried or can 'o' crickets to the babyfood?

I thought of that too when I was first getting into Cresteds, because I was very against keeping crickets again. I used to keep Chameleons a few years ago, and the crickets are what made me eventually get out of them.

What I didn't realize back when I first started getting my Cresteds is that the movement of the crickets (or any live insects) really stimulates the geckos to eat. Without the movement of live insects, they just don't to eat as much...and they don't grow as fast. When you're talking about adults, growth is obviously not a factor, but they probably won't lay as many eggs without the live crickets.

Personally, I think it's a matter of what you're trying to do. If you want to just keep them as pets, I think you'd be fine just giving them baby food and CGD. I honestly thought that mine did just fine on Crested Gecko Diet and baby food, but they didn't put the size on nearly as quickly. Once I started giving them crickets, it seemed like they really started growing and began breeding soon after.

If you really want to breed them, you will eventually end up feeding crickets when you see the difference that the crickets make.

Now that I have Cresteds and have seen how much faster they grow, it's well worth it to me to keep a rubbermaid full of those stupid crickets in the reptile room...especially after getting my first batch of eggs last month.
