do albinos have red eyes? also, she's not eating...

chipstahoy Nov 11, 2003 09:32 PM

i bought a female albino from a show this saturday, and i haven't seen her eat yet. i put mealworms and crickets up to her nose, and she walks away. when i first got her, it seemed like her eyes might be messed up a little...they looked kinda light brownish and like they were half way back into her head (too far rolled to the side...), but now it seems like her whole eyes are red or something...it's kinda weird. i didn't think albino leopards had red eyes cuz they weren't white...so what's the deal here? it's been 3 days and it still seems like she's not eating. how long should i wait b4 i do something? once i get to that point, what do i do? thanks

maybe she's just a little stressed and is trying to get used to her environment - so she doesn't want to eat yet. leave a shallow dish of mealworms so if she does get hungry, she can go eat. if she doesn't eat by friday, you might want to get a fecal done or take her to the vet to check if everything is okay... she might be impacted or have some parasites. also, if she has a tint of red in her eyes, then that should be okay. i also have an albino - from the side she has brown eyes, but from the front, you can see a hint of red (only when her pupils are big.. not under sunlight).

good luck and take care!

make sure it has a day time temp. of 88F. It should eat very soon. It could take up to a week in some cases so dont be alarmed. As for the eyes. When i bought my albino it had bright orange eyes which looked pretty cool. as it got older its eyes got much darker.

Are you using a UTH with her? Do you know what kind of albino she is or who you bought her from? Some albinos do have red eyes, mine does, but that depends on what you're talking about. A pic would sure help.

Make sure she's got a cool and warm side and keep trying to feed her. She may prefer crickets over mealworms, dusted or undusted, or different sizes. Try it all and leave a dish with food for her overnight incase she's just nervous. Good luck.

I hope your little baby is ok. They sometimes don't eat right away, need time to adjust to their new home. Best to put the food in and walk away, she might not eat with you standing there watching. As for food right in front of their noses, mine won't eat if the food it put too close. It's like they don't even see the worms they are practically on top of. Must be the way their eyes focus, if the food is a few inches away they will catch the movement, then zero in, then go get it. Even then, they still miss alot, maybe Leos are far sighted? Here are some eye pics of various morphs I own. I'm planning on getting a Tremper and a Bell, for now I can share Rainwater pics compared to Normal/High Yellow pics...

Freckles (High Yellow het Rainwater)

Jewel (Rainwater Albino het Patternless)

Mystique (Hypo Tang)

Buttercup (Rainwater Albino)

Simba (Patternless Albino)

Scooter (Normal)

Trouble (High Yellow)

As for her eyes being a bit sunken, Albinos are sensitive to light. If you are using a heat lamp or holding her in a brightly lit room she might be reacting to the light. Good luck and keep us posted. Share pics when you can!
