I hate these little flies!!!

rubia May 30, 2003 11:43 PM

I have a 20 gallon long aquarium with two small yellowfoots. They have all the light, heat and humidity they need, and I feed then a diet of greens, fruits and protein(catfood) and sometimes turtle pellets for herbivoirs. Lately, I have had a growing population of little flies, first there was just one or two, and a couple weeks later, there must've been almost 100! They are really slow and easy to vacuum up, I just don't know where they come from? I heard that they come from the bananas, but I am not sure about that. I want to get a little fly strip to put above the tank, but I am scared that the fumes could harm my tortoises. Has anyone had a fly invasion? I clean all the poop and debris on sight....these flies are driving me
crazy.... Help!!

These sound like they are either fruit flies or fungus gnats. both are small flies, Fungus gnats at rest have their wings flat and are slightly larger.

What you can use is either flypaper (unsightly but safe) or a small glass with a little brandy and water in it - (this will attract the fruit flies and they drown in it)

I prefer not to use insecticides around the turtles though there are some anti mite products intended for reptiles that may work as well.

Is this the US version of Tequila with a worm/maggot in it?

Thank you very much, I am going to get a non-toxic fly strip.
