>>Thanks for the tips! What do you mean come in a culture with food. Like a fruit fly culture where they hatch and raise in there?
the right amount. I have had a huge surplus at times. When that happened I just let them coccoon, become moths, mate, lay eggs, feed the moths to my big dragon then put some in the incubator and most in the fridge. They will last up to 5 yrs in the fridge. Eventually when you get things going on a good rotation, which again takes some time to figure out, you will not have to buy any more silkworms, just the food.
BTW, I still haven't figured out a good rotation yet so if you go this route know you are getting yourself possibly into spending decent amount of time dealing with eggs and coccoons and moths. Since most of my surplus has cocooned and have been mating moths I spend about 5-10 minutes every other day on them besides the minute or two it takes to feed them everyday. Not too bad.
I just find it fascinating to hatch the little boogers and eventually I'll figure out a good rotation and will probably never have to buy silkies again.
I do like the idea of having a smaller minimum order. The min. at mbfarms can be a PIA! The service is awesome, though, and they always give more than ordered.
