between UTH and beardie

I have an UTH that I use during fall and winter to keep my dragon warm when he sleeps. He sleeps on his sand usually under a piece of slate that is in his cage. I know that I will hear it that I use sand (repti), and that I use a UTH to begin with. But, if you could, please give me an idea of what to put under the sand so that the UTH doesn't overheat my dragon thru the glass. He likes to dig alot and alot of the time I find him laying directly on the bottom of his cage. I have tried to get him to sleep on his log or on top of his cage, but he prefers to dig under this piece of slate and cozy up under it. I just want him to stay warm. It doesn't get too cold in the room he is in, but he is on the 2nd floor of our home and the heat comes from the ceiling. I don't know that he gets alot of the heat. I thought about using something like a shelf liner, but will that keep him safe enough?

if the ground temperatures in the cage don't drop below 65F you don't need any additional heat, especialy from the bottom. If you are really worred about him getting too cold, buy a ceramic heater or blue (or red) bulb to provide some extra heat. Keep in mind though that the tempshould still drop to around 70F at night.
