First snake

tessai Nov 12, 2003 02:13 PM

This is my first time keeping a snake. Shes about 1 foot long maybe. How often should I feed her? Also, she bit me. I was told that they are docile, but the first day i got snipped on my index finger. I was wondering if something I did triggered this. I slowly approached her to pick her up and she struck. Should I not be handling her? Thanks.

first i would like to say thats a damn nice snake.
If you just got her you should leave her be for about a week. as to why she bit you.........she probly saw you as a threat. she's probly very stressed being moved to a new home. after you've left her for a week give her one mouse leave her for 2 days then you may start to handle her in short periods at first then slowly extend the period of time.
you should feed her an appropreatly sized mouse about every 7-10 days
good luck

Are you saying you got a 10,000 piebald for your first snake?? Geez, correct me if I'm wrong. Or is this a joke.

might be a joke. but you never know. maybe she got really lucky at a reptile show or pet store/ someone at a flea market.

I find ball pythons for cheap at pet shops all the time. I'm pretty sure that it was a joke, or he mistakenly put the pic up, or he really blew thousands on a pied for his first ever herp.

You don't think its possible for a first timer to keep a piebald? The reason this is my first snake is because I've never really been into snakes and feeding mice. But when I saw the coloration of this python I started reading more about balls, and how you can breed for traits. the whole thing became very interesting , and I figured I'd pick one up as a project. I have experience with almost every other kind of pet, and from what I've read, ball pythons are pretty hardy. I'll be posting alot of questions on this forum, so I just want to clarify that I'm not joking.

No this isn't a joke. I've been keeping chameleons for a long time, and have always been into pets. This snake caught my eye because of the patches. Thanks for the info. I've already fed her once. The breeder (www.boabarn.com) gave me a mouse that was pretty small to go along with the snake. I'm having real hard time finding another mouse that size. The petstores around here only have regular sized, and anything smaller comes frozen. Someone told me she may have bitten me because at that age, all they see is food. If thats true, can i just wiggle a frozen mouse to feed her? Is it possible to order live mice? I ordered crickets by the thousands and its the most econmic and easy way.

how much did you pay for that thing?? its beautiful

LeeFobes Nov 13, 2003 06:28 AM

i would feed it one adult mouse a week. it may not seem like she will eat it, but it can and it probably will. Thats what i had to do with my bp when i first got it. remember to space them out once a week.

Also, try to get it off live food and switch to frozen thawed as soon as possible.

That's a beautiful baby...sigh. Welcome to the forums. BP's are one of the coolest snakes to have, IMO. They are docile, hardy, and the morphs are cool. They don't get too big. All in all, a great snake to start with. As babies, they may nip, simply because they haven't been handled much and it's a defence mechanism. It shouldn't hurt too much, if at all. My 1st bp never nipped all, but my 2nd, from a show, nipped a few times from fear and stress when we first had her home. Gentle handling should bring it around in a few weeks. Just be patient.
As far as feeding frozen, heck, I'd give it a shot. Get tongs and wiggle a defrosted mouse and take advantage of that strike! It's alot easier to keep a freezer of frozen mice. Economical, too, which you must know by buying crickets in bulk.
Have you had the baby sexed yet? And for the curious (me) could you give a ball park figure for the price?
Good luck, and post LOTS of pictures.!!!
