my balls are trying to eat each other

stlphotoguy84 Nov 12, 2003 02:41 PM

i have three balls that i house together, which a lot of people disagree with but they are small balls, i have one male that i've had for about 7 months and he is still small, i also have two females that i've had for about a month now. now i've feed them now three times and i was on my way to feeding them (the females) and when i took them out of the cage to put them in the feeding container i noticed that my one female was biting the other one's side. how did this happen? was she just hungry? or is there something else to this?

the feeding container is divided into two so each can eat in it at the same time.

thanks,
R. Wolff

Perhaps you might have two males in cage and they are in combat.

once they know they are to be fed or actually smell food.they bite at anything that moves.....even shadows.or oter balls...

actually they like to bite at anything tat moves even if they didn't smell food.....

balls are jumpy,,balls are not friendly.....balls hate people....

go ahead people ...tell me how yours' likes to lay on a computer(anyone...noone specific)....then there are people that say their ball likes to go for car rides,,,bike rides...hay rides with leatherface.......swimming in the lagoon in Hawaii.....hell..I like that one........

yep

........get more cages.........easier...........

Still balls have their own personality. I've gotten away with feeding some in the same cage for years (don't recommend it, just don't have enough cages yet) but quickly had problems any time I tried this with boas or corn snakes.

I did recently have a revelation along the lines of your observations about balls not enjoying people. I had two balls that where always ridged when handled (one I suspect was a relatively recent import). It really didn't dawn on me that they where just too scared to strike until the both started doing it. The one I think was fresh imported is now pure evil (hissing and striking at every encounter). Just surprising how little I knew about her when I thought she was nice. I still think some of them are less bothered by handling than others but I now have a new respect for just how shy they can be.

They smelled the food, and it gave their feeding insticts a jump start. So the female bit the closest thing around.

Be careful when feeding!

yea, balls are the killers of the snake world.....not. My ball has only snapped at me once, becuase i held a rat before i started to let him wrap around me. plus he was in shed (i was more of a newb during that time) he has never snapped at me since.

I was feeding a pinky to a hatchling when it missed it and grabbed my ring finger. It coiled around me and constricted my finger. It was bloody, and I had to carefully pry it off before it tried eating me.

I only handle my balls when i'm cleaning them(just realized this is the only place on the web you can say that in polite conversation).anyway I only handle them at feeding and cleaning time. They are over a year old(7 balls)and a couple of them have become very agressive.I don't try to get them used to being handled ,because I don't want them to loose thier natural instincs when I go to breed them(when I was a teen I handled my snakes all the time and they wouldn't breed for me).But they do strike and bite my sometimes.Just posting this for those that think balls don't bite.they will if you don't handle them regular.oh yea ,they never tried to bite me when I was alredy holding them after picking them up from behind, just when I reached in thier cage casualy.
