2 weeks no food, wieght loss, soft casqe - Mouth rot MBD?

Mr_pokey Nov 12, 2003 03:51 PM

My 1 year old Male Vieled Cham stopped eating about 3 weeks ago, before he stoped eating i noticed he was havin trouble with his tounge 3 out of 5 times he would miss his target, then he just stopped eating all together. I always cup feed him, and i always use a spray bottle for him to drink. He still drinks regularly but doesnt eat, the only time he gets food is when im giving him water and able to slip a wax worm in his mouth witch he still has trouble getting down... he never opens his mouth wide enough for me to be able to investigate. Today i noticed his casqe was gettin soft!! before he stopped eating his diet was mostly Superworms and crickets. he lives in an open room enclosure , with a vine hangin down in front of my window for sun, I made an appointment with the vet on friday,

Any advice our resourses would be much appreciated by me and my Cham Mr. Pokey...

Some people can tell you more but here are some basics.

Your chameleon NEEDS about 12 hours of UV light. Being in front of the window dosnt always cut it. Depending where you live, there might not be enough light hours from the sun.

ONLY special light bulbs will provide UV rays that they would normally get from tropical sunshine. Normal house lights are for heat only. Be sure you're providing at least 12 hours of this special light.

Glass filters most of that out. He probably has MBD if you have no UVB light for him. We also need more info as to how you are supplementing him. I would get him to a vet right away and maybe he can check for mouth rot or give him a calcium shot with D3. He may need that to pull him out of his downward spiral at this point.
If you e-mail me I will try to send a care sheet that I gave people that bought my veileds and you can review it and see if there is something in the husbandry that is lacking for him besides UVB.
I still feel at this point if the casque is soft he needs a vet ASAP
