Keeping Easterns together?

c&f Nov 12, 2003 04:03 PM

Hi; I have a pair of Easterns that have lived side by side in separate enclosures for the first year of their lives, they are both 1yo. They watch each other through the glass all day, everyday, but never hood, strike, or show any discontentment toward each other, only me! So, I know its extremely dangerous to keep babies together, but what about adults? I'm at the point where their 50/50 split 55gal tank (layed on its side) is getting a bit small, as they are both big hogs of similar size.

I was thinking of putting two 55gal tanks side by side, but it won't quite work in my room, and I feel bad splitting them up, as they would end up across the room from each other. Does anyone have any experience with keeping them together, or is it just a bad idea like with most other species?

Thanx in advance for your insight!

Wow that sounds big for 1 year old easterns. I keep mine together all the time. They are not know to eat each other like the other type of Heteron.

Looks like your about as busy as I am! Well, I was thinking of trying them together supervised to see how it goes before I let them be alone for an extended period of time, so maybe I'll give it a go sometime soon. Its good to hear someone is having success with this situation. How long have yours been together?, and do they breed?, interact?, like each other?

Just curious about their dynamics!

Thanx

Unfortunately my easterns are 0.2. The male I got with them died because he would not switch to pinkies and California ain't got hardly no toads.LOL.
They don't interact they just tolerate each other I think. Hopefully I'll get a male soon. They are both 2002 stock and both 16 and 17.5" long. Try not to feed them too much because I've had problems since the pinkies are so much fattier than toads.
