Ringneck eating a Zonata???????...........

oreganus May 31, 2003 01:59 AM

Okay, has anyone ever heard of something like this? I have never had anything like this happen with ringnecks. I caught baby zonata, put it in with a ringneck, well checked on them when I got a chance to sit down, and I HAD ONE SNAKE, A REALLY FAT RINGNECK?!?!?!?!?! Anyone ever observe this, Mr.Hoyer perhaps?

Kevin:
Races of the Ringneck Snake in various regions are well known reptile eaters. In the early 1980's I documented Ringneck Snakes eating neonate Rubber Boas. I have maintained reasonably large local female Ringnecks (20 - 25 inches) and fed them juvenile Northwestern Garter Snakes along with Long-toed Salamanders. In a recent study conducted at OSU dealing with the Ringneck's toxin, they found the species preying upon Red-spotted (Common) Garter Snakes out at E. E. Wilson Wildlife Area north of Corvallis. A few years ago I have two individual verify that the Ringneck consumes the Sharp-tailed Snake and I found a small Ringneck in S. Oregon with a large meal within that turned out to be a juv S. Alligator Lizard.

Have not heard of the species taking zonata but it does not surprise me. A researcher that is now at Utah State U. told me a few years ago that he fed his large Regal Ringneck juvenile Gopher Snakes.

Those western ringnecks feed highly on reptiles it seems. Eastern ringneck races tend to stay mostly on worms and salamanders, but I believe in the west you are somewhat short in some areas on those so the ringnecks are somewhat larger with a somewhat more potent venom to allow them to take down lizards and small snakes that are more plentiful than the prey of the eastern races. Mine (a TX locale miss. ringneck) feeds exclusively on ground skinks but has taken a small brown snake before. Andy

In 1997 I caught a ringneck (not particularly large) that gurged a legless lizard (Anniella pulchra).

Was going to publish the feeding record in Herp. Review but a similar feeding record had already been published for a nearby location.

of the decade!
That is a tough way to lose a zonata.
I would have thought that maybe the king would eat the ringneck--not the other way around.

Back in the early 80's I had a large Ringneck that I caught in Monterey, that consumed his Sharp-tailed Snake cagemate. Considering that I never caught a Cal King when I lived in Califormia, that was the closest I came to a "king" snake
