Boa breeding question

KIllerTodd Nov 12, 2003 05:18 PM

I am thinking of getting a 100% het pair. I really want to get an Albino Boa but the prices are still a little steep. Do you think the price will come down for them? I would love to know the odds on breeding a 100% het pair. Are Boas easy to breed? IS the market going to fall on these nice animals?

Time will tell whether or not prices fall. In my opinion they will not drop quickly any time soon. A lot more poeple are breeding albinos but demand rises as price drops because more people can afford them. In my opinion this should keep the price steady for a while. Boa breeding seems to be pretty straight forward but I have been told by a reputable breeder that it is not as easy as follwing someone else's recipe. He told me that it requires that you be wary and receptive to what your animals want and need to keep them healthy. I know of at least to very smart people that have failed 2 consecutive years in a row now. This is my first year attempting so I can't give advice based on my breeding experience. Good luck.

Heres what the probabilities should look like when you breed a heterozygous to another heterozygous :
25% homozygous or normal colored
50% heterozygous for albinism
25% albino

Making all the normal colored boas in the litter about 66% posssibly heterozygous for albinism.
A litter of 20 should look something like this:
5 normal
10 heterozygous
5 albino
