Hibernation

Will ribbon snakes hibernate on their own, even if you keep light and heat consistant through the winter? If so, can anyone give me some tips for hibernating? This is my first time owning a snake in the winter. I'm kinda new to this.

I don't think it could technically be called hibernation, but I suppose the snake could go off feed.

First of all, "hibernation" isn't strictly necessary. My garter snake wasn't hibernated the first many years I had him, but I've done the following for the last two years:

1. Reduce photoperiod during the weeks prior to planned hibernation.
2. Last feeding around the first week of December.
3. Maintain temps (to ensure digestion) for two weeks.
4. Relocate enclosure to garage (temp in the 50s here in south TX).
5. Ensure a constant water supply and check the snake weekly (I weigh mine to monitor any significant changes).
6. Bring 'em back in the house in February, start up the increasing photoperiod bit, and offer food.

That being said, my garter also randomly decides to go on hunger strikes, with his current being the longest--he hasn't eaten since May, though food is offered. I still plan on putting him in the garage, because he weighs more now than he did all last year (I switched him to mice this year and he doubled his weight).
