Update......Egg bound

Bethstang Nov 12, 2003 09:13 PM

Well, to make a long story short. She wasn't egg bound. I had intially thought that because I could see 2 white ovals in her abdomen that looked and were positioned like eggs. We did surgery on her and it was her bladder that was full of urates. Was told that was probably caused from trichomonis, which was correct, her fecal smear was full of them. And was told since she hadn't been eating, losing weight and diarrhea that I should test for crypto, test results came back today positive. Since she has been exposed to all 6 of my geckos I am in the process of testing each of them. None of the other geckos have shown any signs, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. Any advice you could give me on this subject is greatly appreciated. Is there any disinfectant I can use to clean her tank with?

Thanks, Beth

Well, I'm glad you were able to catch it before any of your other leos got symptomatic.

Since you'll be having to do a lot of cleaning, I recommend using Nolvasan. It doesn't have the fumes bleach has. thebeanfarm.com sells it $30/gallon, but you only need to use 1-2 table spoons per gallon of water. No disinfectant is actually strong enough to kill the oocysts (eggs), but it's better than nothing. The best way to get rid of the oocysts is to just flush them out with soap and water and discard anything that comes in contact with the feces. Change anything moist (water bowl and humid hide) daily.

Good luck!

Bleach is the cheapest cleaning agent I am aware of. A 10% bleach solution with some dish washing solution added works well for cleaning.

I've heard that to sterilize a tank, you can use a more concentrated bleach solution, seal the tank, and place it in full sun for a day. The combination of high temperatures and chlorine is supposed to kill anything in the tank. (I've never tested this).

If you have any wood / rock furnishings you would like to disinfect you can bake them in the oven at 250 for 15 minutes.

Hope this helps,
Alice
