strange behavior in my BP??

carl3 Nov 12, 2003 09:37 PM

I am not new to this site or to reptiles BUT I observed a strange behavior in one of my ball python's tonight that I have not seen before.

My BP was laying with its belly kinda turned up???? Temps are fine with a suitable range, everything else is ok too such as proper hiding spots, paper towel substrate, large enough water bowl to completely submerge....Like I said, EVERYTHING is fine (no medical problems, etc) BUT I have never seen this behavior before. My guess is that it may be OVERFED? I feed only once every week but maybe its too much or the prey is too big causing digestion problems.

HAS ANYONE ELSE OBSERVED THIS BEHAVIOR due to OVERFEEDING? If not, what else should I look to modify? Any experienced suggestions welcomed.
THANKS in Advance

yes , just had that happen recently. based on the ball python video , I would have thought she was ready to breed, but she's only a 2002, not big enough. thought about posting the same question.I now feel beter someone else has whitnessed this, but have no idea what it's all about.how old/big is yours male/female?

She's between 1-2 years old AND does not have access to her male counterpart. I never thought that it could possibly be breeding troubles... but ya never know ... nature finds a way....

I really think i may have just been overfeeding...i will skip this week and observe what will happen.

I keep detailed records for my whole collection but i don't have access at the moment to them....so i am not sure of her exact age BUT she is def not old enough for breeding...i was going to wait another 2-3 years at least.

Hi there,

Several of my snakes sometimes invert after big meals (often, a few days after the meal). I wouldn't worry. She just has a full tummy .

Hi Carl –

In my experience, this is quite common with ball pythons. Here’s a link to something I posted earlier on this subject:

What would cause my female BP to lay upside down??

Other people chimed in on that topic in that thread, too.
