I found this guy on a house call.
I looks like it might have a little bit of mojave influence but overall it looks like a WDB.
Looks like a pretty typical young atrox to me.
Head shape and yellow rattle. I say cross yes. I have never seen a
atrox with a yellow rattle that didn't have some scut blood. LOL
If this were not a new born, I might agree on the potential cross, but, I still think that little fella is an atrox. The basal rattle will darken in time. Head scalation, from what little I can see, also appears like a normal atrox. That's my thoughts anyway. Who knows for sure??
Wow, It looks almost identical to the one that I had questions about below.. Slightly darker blacks but it also could be the lighting.. In what area was this house call in? Also what would you say the total lenght is on that little one.?
This snake is right around 12". It was picked up on a house call in
Queen creek. About 8 out of 10 rattlesnake house calls in that area
are mojaves. It's hard to make a call just from a pic. The thing that makes
me sure it is a cross is the shape of the head. The yellow rattle. And the
attitude. He can not be hooked. He strikes at any thing that moves. He
strikes the shoe box 6 or 8 times before I can get him out. I got him out the other day to look at him. And I had the fan on in the room. He felt the
air and was striking stright up. I love that kind of spunk. Not a good snake for beginers.lol
This specimen is a captive-bred atrox, and certainly not a cross - I don't see much of a difference to the photo you showed. Maybe there is some regional variation in rattle colour?
Cheers,
Wolfgang

Very nice shot of the little atrox. The depth of field and clarity are great for such a small photo. It's good to see that you stop by the crotalid forum once in a while.
