fighting....

verve May 31, 2003 03:52 AM

i have a group of 0.0.4 leos that are about 4 inches(snout to tip of tail). i tried sexing them but i'm not very confident. i seem to see both ventral spores and humps on all of them(2 are from the same batch and the others from other breeders). a friend told me that it's too early to sex them and i have to wait till they get to around six months. my problem is that i'm afraid that the males might fight one another. so i would like to know at what age or size, will male leos show agression towards one another. thanks!

It has been my experience that the males start showing aggression when they get to be around 40g or 5 months or so. One thing I have noticed about male geckos reaching maturity is that one day the geckos will be all cuddled up together in the same hide like normal, and then the next they each start hanging out in separate parts of the enclosure. That means someone has gotten too aggressive, and it is usually the gecko that is still sleeping in the hide

Yea around the time of them reaching sexual machiortity is when they start to fight, but this doesnt mean they def. will, they usualy fight for the females to breed with them. so your fine now, once they do start getting bigger id move them each into their own 10 gal. sex them then so your def. on the sex, sell every male you have besides one and then buy a trio of females.

I have a quick question about what you said about them being on different sides of the tank. I have 2 females leos that are about 8 months to a year old. The females won't fight like the males do will they? Because sometimes they are on different sides of the tank, one in the humid hide and one in the dry hide...and other times they are together. I was just curious if they will fight like the males.

some females fight. but in your case, i bet that they just dont want the exact same thing at the exact same time.
