Hi everyone, I'm looking into getting a tegu, and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a care sheeet online...just doing a little bit of homework! I want to know if this is something I have time/effort/money for. Also, what are your opinions on tegus as pets? Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Rachel

Heres a list of sites I went to before I got my Arg. Black & White, Nienna:

The site below has the best source of information, read through it first.
http://www.agamainternational.com/merianae.shtml

http://www.bluetegu.com/merianae.html

The site below has a list of fruits you can feed your Tegu, and what not to feed your Tegu.

Good job on doing your research.

Hi Rachel-

I have had a lot of pets, including parrots, dogs, chickens, bearded dragons, and snakes. My tegus are really great for amount of enjoyment for the amount of work you put in. For amount of care, after they are set up, I think they are easier than bearded dragons because they don't need live food, and the struggle to keep them in good supply of calcium in their bones is easier because tegus are not evolved to have so much sun blasting on them as bearded dragons. they are definately easier than a parrot, not emotionally needy, but harder than chickens.

I believe that tegus need to be able to explore or roam about with close supervision, so be prepared to house them/it in it's own room, or share a room with it. I share a screened in porch/studio with my tegus. It works out well. they also have their own outbuilding with yard, but they are terribly spoiled. Once you get to know your tegu, the idea of keeping it in a cage is sort of like thinking of keeping your cat in a cage. They are very intelligent and responsive.

I highly recommend getting a baby from Agama international. they are fantastic, and have very hardy animals.

good luck, Ali

I have several hundred mouths to feed here, turtles dragons, k-9, snakes... and I handle all of them. I have to say my big red male tegu is one of my favorites. Tegus are inteligent and inquisitive. Since you are doing the research first, I hope you will find that Tegus do require social interaction on a regular basis. Not as much as Ig's but you do need to give them attention. You also need to provide them with a large habitat. If you have any questions I would be happy to help. Give me a call or shoot me an email. Good luck.
