positive fecal scarlet king

coolhl7 Nov 13, 2003 07:49 AM

one of my 7 scarlet kings has a positive fecal....
several questions
1)is there an on-line site to help me ID the ova?
2)what is the best "how to" book for snake parasites and treatment?
3)its my only scarlet king that absolutely refuses F/T pinks so it has eaten both live (initially) and now f/t anoles. very healthy and I plan to brumate in 10 days... I dont plan to treat until after she lays eggs next season. The ova appear almost perfectly oval with 4 small round structures within each ova...any ideas? thanks

It's tough to say without see a photo, but my guess would be that they are coccidia (Eimeria sp) oocysts.

thanks for the prompt response. I will look that up in my vets book...
what would dosage/route/med for an adult scarlet kingsnake be if that is the case? Many thanks

your guess is 100% correct
coccidia (Eimeria sp) oocysts.

is treatment necessary...sounds incredibly prevalent in the wild.
can I wait till after brumation?
thanks!
maybe you should change your handle to wiseherper

I usually do not treat if I only see a few oocysts on a slide. If I see more than an average of 4 oocysts per field, then I treat with Albon. Coccidia can be VERY difficult to eliminate, sometimes requiring 6 or more treatments. One of the most important aspects of treating coccidia is keeping the cage scrupulously clean.

thanks, I read some of your old posts that were very helpful...I only saw 1 - 2 oocytes per high power field...I ordered " Understanding Reptile Parasites: A Basic Manual for
Herpetoculturists". I hope you approve. I used to own that big 2 volume edition but it was overkill and not very practical. Thanks again.

That is a great beginner book. The same author also makes a color laminated guide to parasites, I found mine at beanfarm.com
