Peat Moss and Tortoises

beccadvorak Nov 13, 2003 10:54 AM

Hi All,

I'm going to try and introduce a microclimate into my sulcata's pen (a tupperware bin with an entrance cut into it). I am worrying over whether or not the little guy will eat the peat moss. And if he does, are there ill effects?

Thanks,

Becca

If you use any of the mosses they might check it out by giving it a taste but usually not eat it. Another disadvantage for using the stuff is the bugs it attracts (mites and knats) These should not harm the tortoise but they are anoying.
The advantage to using the stuff is that the animal can burrow into it and it retains its moisture for a good long time.
I also suggest a very fine grained sand. You don't have the bug problem with this but it requires moistening more often.

I use peat moss for my Sulcata hatchling and my young eastern boxies. They do really well with it. I love that it holds moisture when I need it.
