What do you put your worms in?

skmcwilliams Nov 13, 2003 11:22 AM

I have kept my mealworms/superworms in bran for years, the problem is my husband is almost deathly allergic to the stuff, He can't go in to the same room that I keep it in, but since it's bran if I put it in the garage then all those other beetles grow in it. Is there anything that they can be kept in that's mildly cost effective. Thanks

I keep my SuperWorms in slightly moistened Spagnum Peat Moss. I get my worms from Bassetts Cricket Ranch, and that is what they raise them in there. It works great. No odors or dust, and is REALLY cheap. It is available at Home Depot, Lowes, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Target, or any hardware type store.

Its good stuff Maynard !

Have you tried oatmeal? That's what I keep them on. Not sure if this will effect his allergy any, but you can try it. I've also seen them kept on bare bottom with egg cartons, toilet paper rolls, and bunched up paper. As long as you provide food/moisture and floor space so they don't bite on each other they should be fine. I always kept them in the oatmeal cause they like to burrow, and feed from underneith, but they will eat anyway really. Where I buy them from they keep them bare bottom with rolled up butchers paper, and egg cartons. They keep huge amounts like this and feed large squash, and pumkins.

I gutload my superworms, then freeze them. After thawing they occasionally go on the greens and the beardies love them frozen/thawed.

Get silkworms. Don't have to put them on anything, just feed them the silkworm chow.
