Ant Questions

jwainhause Nov 13, 2003 02:31 PM

Can anyone tell me the average amount of ants a HL will need on a daily basis? Also, how hard is it to keep ants as feeders... do ants smell? Temps? Food&water, etc?

thanks

YOUR QUESTIONS: Can anyone tell me the average amount of ants a HL will need on a daily basis? Also, how hard is it to keep ants as feeders... do ants smell? Temps? Food&water, etc?

[BLUE]DON'T FORGET THEY NEED TO BE HARVSTER ANTS![/BLUE]

It differs between lizards. My lizzard eats maybe 25 - 30. As your HL gets older it will more then likely pick-up it's ant intake. If you are not sure when enough is enough, observe the next time you feed him/her. They will usually get sluggish and be more reluctant to eat the ants. It should be around 20 or so. If at 20 ants so far, and he/she keeps going for them, then by all means keep feeding the ants in moderate ammounts at the same time.

Keeping ants is rediculously easy. I use a rubbermaid container about a foot and a quarter high. I get my ants from antsalive.com because they say their ants are bad climbers on smoother surfaces. I put about an inch or two of sand (I use play sand for the ants). MIST the ant cage, not the walls!!!!, just the sand. If you spray the walls it will create a residue that the ants can get a grip of. I also clean the walls every so often to retain the plastics smoothness.

The temp should be atleast room temp, 65-70. Don't store in direct sunlight or anything.

The only way an ant bin will smell is if you put a lot of greens and fruit rhinds in and don't clean them out when they get nasty. I always feed my ants apple pieces, lettuce, and fruit rhinds. If you order from antsalive they will give you a care sheet that will also explain most of your questions and concerns.
