3 toed food

favoritemistake Nov 13, 2003 03:34 PM

I recently got a 3 toed boxie as a rescue of sorts. Ive kept easterns most my life, but never a 3 toed. She was under weight a bit, but seems otherwise healthy. However the only thing she has eaten for me so far is superworms. She loves them, but ignores everything else. Ive tried cantalope, watermelon, peppers, peas, bananas, leaf lettuces, tomatoes, an earthworm, and probably a few other things I can not recall. My easterns eat these things. I know she was in captivity for 4 years. I dont know her original origin, or how the people had been caring for or feeding her.
Basicaly, Im looking for suggestions on how to get her to eat other foods, I know she needs variety. I tried putting superworms on other food, buyt she just picked them off.

Well if you are keeping it out doors or it was in the wild recentely it may not want to eat at all
but if it was a pet or if its eating enough superworms to make you think its appetite is good then try baby food.

I have 4 three toeds and they show very little interest in vegetable matter except apples. So i get frozen pureed squash and sweet potatoes and high quality (low sugar) baby food and cover their worms with this. If you don't dip the heads they stay alive and wiggle and the turtles eat them,. (if you do dip the heads they drown) You can add calcium and vitimins and greens which have been super finely grately or liquified in a blender to the baby food or pureed veggies and these will stick yo the worms as well. Oh and try mushrooms.. these go over well with some picky boxies i have seen. For protein ideas try tuna, boiled chicken, boiled egg white and cooked crayfish (i debated this one a long time but they Do eat it in the wild and mine do eat them in the cage)

I know sometimes my three toed gets stuck on only eating earthworms or other proteins. I take the veggies and fruits and some canned low fat cat or dog food and mix them up. My turtle likes the cat and dog food.So when you mix them with the veggies, the veggies smell like the dog food and the turtle eats them.

Its hard sometimes and my turtle has refused to eat the veggies but i foudn taht after abotu 1 week of not eating she is hungry enough to atleast try the veggies. If all she has availiable is veggies she will eventually eat them.Atleast this was the case with my turtle.

I have an older three-toed male who will only eat hamburger and bananas. He won't touch moist cat food or anything healthier. I have managed to get him to start eating carrots for supplemental vitamin A by chopping the carrots into tiny bits and mixing it in with the hamburger so he has to eat carrots as wel as the meat. This has worked, and he has stayed healthy ever since I added the carrots to this diet.
