Help Please, I am about to lose my home owners insurance

ktalai Nov 13, 2003 05:31 PM

Hello All,

I am in the process of starting a business and thought it would be good to include my passion for lizzards and tarantulas into my business. Today I went to my State Farm agent to see if they have a liability insurance for businesses that buy and sell lizards and tarantulas. Not only my trip wast fruiteless, I was also informed that they are probably gonna cancel my home insurance because of exposure risks. I let the agent know how I felt about their ignorant projudice about things they are not familiar with.

That said, I need to find an open minded insurance company that doesn't blindly regard exotic pets as dangerous from what they have seen on TV. I would be interested in companies who offer home owners insurance to exotic pet owners and companies that offer liability insurance for businesses that buy and sell exotic pets. Also, any information about licensing requirements for exotic pet trade (if any) aside from normal business licenses would be much appreciated.

Thanks and best regards,
Kamran

I'm sorry to hear about what happened. I two have State Farm as my insurance company and keep a lot of cats, reptiles, snakes and frogs...But I sure the hell wouldn't tell them that or invite them over for dinner becuase of the risk of them canceling my policy. For that reason, DON"T tell the next insurance company that you keep reptiles. They do not HAVE to insure you if they don't want to and you have almost no legal recourse. It sucks big time but that's the pull they have. Also one more thing to be aware of, if they do cancel your home owners policy and you try to shop elsewhere. Insurances companies keep shared databases (kinda like health insurance companies do) about their policy holders and claims they've made and or reasons they were cancled. You may be up sh*t creek without a paddle on this one sorry to say.

If someone else knows something about how to get around these ignorant insurance companies please speak up, I would love to know too just in case mine finds out about my critters.

the point of telling them is to get them covered. DUH! she wants them to get covered in case of an accident, hence she wanted them under her policy as well.

And I think you missed my point too. There is no reason to be rude to me. I've seen too many people LOSE their home owners insurance becuase they simply inquired if their reptiles would be covered or even simply mentioned that they had them. They won't cover you, you are considered too big of a risk. Why don't you go ask a reptile store owner what their liability insurance runs and how long it took them to find a company that WOULD cover them?
