Pogonomyrmex ant question

geckoboy03 Nov 13, 2003 07:28 PM

Does it matter what species of Pogonomyrmex ants you feed you HL? If so what specific species does the CHL eat?

I was just wondering what ant species the Coast horned lizard eats.

There are undoubtedly many species. The area where I see them is full of P. Californicus, which I have observed them chowing down on. There are also a few types of carpenter ants. What general area are you in?

I live in the Oxnard Camarillo area of Southern California. I don't really live in these areas but in a place close to it.

Cool, I just moved away from there about a year ago. I am very familiar with the area but didn't get into HL's until I moved to the desert. I still work down there and plan on doing some scouting in the spring. I know a few places that are suposed to have CHL's and I plan to confirm it for myself.
As for the ants, I really didn't pay much attention when I was there. Do you have photo's of any around your house? Post them if you do.
Check out my posts for the last few months. There are quit a few photos of Pogo's I have found around my place and in the nearby mountains.
Cheers!

That's cool, I will try to get some ant photos of some ants near my house. Do you know where Thousand Oaks is thats close to where I live.

I lived in Simi and Moorpark. I know just where it is. So there are Coastal HL's around there?

Dude thats awesome! Yeah, I guess I have a knack for finding these guys. I have seen three CHL's this fall, and during the spring I saw like 6 different adult individuals. They seem to enjoy this area. I think the ants I have near my house are P. rugosus. So I think I got that problem solved.
