digital thermometers

zeeker13 Nov 13, 2003 08:33 PM

I have a indoor/outdoor digital thermometer from radio shack, and I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to shorten the outside sensor wire, its just too long. would this effect the readings? it seems like the actual sensor is at the very tip. thanks in advance.

An even better solution is to get the tempgun from proexotics. Seriously, its a good tool. You just have to press the button and it gives you and instant reading wherever you want. Here is the link to it. http://www.tempgun.com/

Oh, to your original question, I think it would work if you shortened it(never actually tried though), but you can just use a twistie tie and wrap up the excess near the display part if you wanted to play it safe.

I shortened mine with no noticeable difference. I took a temp in the cage, shortened the wire and took the temp in the same spot. No difference.

I suppose you could cut the probe wire a few inches away from the sensor, then sauder the wires together and cover the cut with electrical tape. I would first remove the batteries from the sensor, don't think the battery power would harm you but why waste the energy?
