I think my Imitators are breeding right now!

shopaholic Nov 14, 2003 12:23 AM

Oh my goodness! I think my imitators are finally breeding even as I write. They are in a brom bract filled with water. The female is sort of on top of the male or at least behind him and he is twitching his rear and back legs around while staying in front/under her and calling. They are not struggling and he seems very excited. In the time it took to write this, she has left the bract and is exploring the other sites on the same brom. The male is calling and calling. IT rained here in the last 2 days, the temp. in the tank is 74.5F right now and 99%humidity. Do you think they objected to me watching them? Were they attempting to breed?

they shouldn't mind. and it sounds like they are trying to breed. would this be their first time? also, is it just the pair, if not what is the ratio?

It is a trio from Tor Limbo. They have bred for him before but I've had them since May and the male calls like crazy without any response from the female. Course, they were in a temp tank while I was getting a final tank made by Drew Martinez. This is a 30 gal tank complete with mister. I have noticed that they do not like the larger broms. When I added the small broms recently offered on Black Jungle's site(the ones that flower at only 4-6 inches), and the rain began here they then tried to mate. Black Jungle told me that they see their Imitators repond to the storm fronts. I've had my Fire Bellies do the same in the past. We'll see what happens...i'm sayin' a prayer! Thanks-Maggie

Sounds cool, let us know if you get some eggs. I am still unsure if I have a pair of imitators myself. I know the one is a male from the calling and as far as I can tell the other is not calling. So we will see. Good luck with yours.

Hi,
If I were you I'd check the brom axil for a tad. This past summer I let my pair raise a tad and that is how he got her to lay infertile eggs for it.He would go to the axil and call and call until she came to it.He would back into the water and so would she then she would lay the eggs for the tad.Mine usually lay on the glass or leaves.Mine haven't ever laid in a brom axil unless it was for feeding,as far as I know.If you don't see a tad look for eggs in the water. The tads, when young, are really small and you may not be able to see it. The eggs are cream colored so they should show up better.
Good Luck,
Mark W.
