How to heat a Rubbermaid container?

mikemckenny Feb 07, 2003 10:34 AM

How do people heat rubbermaids or sterilits? Lights above, flexwatt, undertank heaters?

What's the best way to get ambiant heat and belly heat at the right temps.

thanks,

mike

If you are only heating a few rubbermaid enclosures then heat mats are simple and work well. If you are heating more than a few enclosures then heat tape is a better idea. Either way you should control the heating device with a rheostat (dimmer) or a thermostat.

it seems that the term "heat pad" is often used to refer to different things. do you mean the ones that stick to the bottom of the tank?

or, a flex-watt type pad?

or, a zoo-med type that is covered in black plastic vinyl?

I need help with what type (brand, model, etc) to get.

Heat pad can mean a lot of things. I'm reffering to the flat heat pads that you get at the pet store. They are just an electrical element covered in plastic or vinyl.

Flexwat makes the heat tape which is really just the same as the heat pads except that is comes in rolls and has to be cut to length and wired up yourself. The stick-on pads are the same thing as the tape and the vinyl coverd pads. (I would recomend not using the self adhesive so that you don't have to peel it off when you want to change your set up.) Just about any pad you get will heat up enough for most animal enclosure requirements (provided you get the right size). So it's not so much a question of which works best but which one will work for your set up...and how well you set it up.

Got it?

I like human pads the most becaus they are cheaper, and you can get varying degrees of heat,

Where can I get it? How much does it cost? And how do I wire it up?
