A few questions..

psmoore Nov 14, 2003 09:49 AM

I'm considering getting a Kingsnake. My wife isn't really up to it, but I'm working it on her. I've kept them in the past, but had a seperate room for them, so the lights at night were no issue. The issue now will be that if she lets me have one, it'll be kept in our bedroom. Is there any other options for heat besides the night lights (red or blue or black)???

Also, we live in a small town and I was wondering if you could give some names of some good breeders/dealers that are online.

I'm thinking of a Snow Kingsnake.

Thanks for all the help.

Paul

Paul,

Sounds exactly like my situation about 2 months ago. I got my kingsnake from Rick at Renegade Reptiles. You can find his link on this site at the top. The whole experience with him was great -- start to finish. The king I got is very docile and in great health, eats extremely well. It literally was handleable right out of the box, and its never once even taken a defecsive posture let alone attempted to bite. I'm very satisfied.

I had the same issue with keeping the snake in our bedroom. I found a combination of an undertank heater and a lamp on one end of the tank does the trick. As to the light the lamp gives off, I'm using a "black" heat lamp that gives off a purple glow, but it is dim enough that it doesn't bother my wife or I at all. I think in the summer I could do without the light at night, but it is cold enough where I live that it must be on all the time to maintain temps.

I have never used a heat light for any of my snakes. All I use is a under tank heater and it seems to be fine and I never had a problem with it. I think more terrestrial snakes would need a heat lamp then your kings and milks. If I did put on a light it would just be for viewing purposes. If you would still like to use the light fixture, maybe try a ceramic heat emitter, they don't put out any light and can be used at night.
