Wild snake in natural habitat

HfLAK Nov 14, 2003 10:02 AM

Here we see a common Aphid-Eating Tree Snake prowling the scrub in search of prey; if not his namesake then perhaps a sassy cricket will do. These 'lil beauties are as common as dirt here in SW Ohio and can often be seen rolling themselves into hoops and racing down the sidewalks like runaway bicycle wheels.
The local indians used to make a tea from the dried limbs of these snakes to treat Manifest Destiny.

I was born and raised in Ohio and remember well the thrill of seeing these beauties covering the sidewalks of my small town. My mother used to make me go out with a broom and sweep them into bushel baskets which we would add to the garden soil. This was an easy chore for me except some of them were 10-12ft in length and too big to sweep. Those we would lasso and gently lead to the garden. It's nice to know that things haven't changed much in the passing years.
