Well gang, as you all know I was expecting some Halloween hatchlings>

eve Nov 14, 2003 10:05 AM

Well something Spooky happened for sure, very very sad. The eggs began to sweat last week and just stopped. But some began to look dented in, I waited awhile, till beginning of this week. Then thru absolute disbelief that the eggs that had stayed so beautiful till last week, were lost.

Someone had mentioned since it was her second clutch and I had not candled them , maybe they were infertile. But I had seen pink from day one.

Anyway 2 days ago, I opened the first one that had started to sweat. And there was a beautiful perfectly formed (but dead baby) very upsetting to say the least. Last night I opened 3 others, to find 3 more dead baby collareds.

I have 2 eggs left , I don't want to see anymore,

I will have to figure out what went wrong, I have a major thought, Last Friday night, after the one began to sweat, It got really cold here, even with the light I left on them. When I got up early the next morning the temp was on the line between 69/ 70 degrees.
So it had definitely dropped below the 72 point. My Fault !

What ever happened, it makes you feel terrible, and also allows you to know it is not always just "Fun and Cute- sy" , there are alot of things to take into consideration before attempting to breed.

I must admit I almost turned all lights back on. And woke everyone from Brumation, deciding, the he$$ with breeding. But then I remember the total miracle I was lucky enough to witness, when I watched my first babies hatching, so totally awesome to say the least. I suppose thats what made THIS SO MUCH MORE HARD TO DEAL WITH.
Have a nice weekend, Eve

You have it in you suncharmer! It happens to everyone some of the time...heck I told you of my acquaintance that lost every clutch this year for one reason or another. I lost several. I would rather have one go peacefully within the egg, than to come out, have a few convulsions, then die with mouth agaping. I had to watch that a few times this year. Pretty painful to watch.

Keep them critters asleep. I have Azul, Sienna, Bernie, and Sammie all sleeping. about ready to add Moweqa and Bluegill too.

your right, What you saw had to have really been tough to watch.
I forgot your Little Tradegies, this breeding season, guess because it was so early in the spring, I did not remember, the ones that had the convultions, until I just read it again. SAD !

Kinda makes ya abit EGG-SHY if ya know what I mean.

Oh well, your also right it is in me, I want so very much to see some LITTLE KONGS & SQUASHYS & PRETTY PETITE YELLOWY CHINOOKS, and KINKYS, and maybe keep 1 from each. It will be all worth it, provided it all goes well, hahahah Eve

My girlfriend's flying geckos are laying eggs, so I've been thinking of the old incubation thing.

I was thinking what I might do, if presented the opportunity, is to set up an incubater with a small water filled aquarium in it, big enough to hold two aquarium heaters. One set to a daytime temperature and the other set to a nighttime temperature.

Then just set them both up on a timer, so that the temperature in the incubator is controlled, but still fluctuates, and will not be impacted by ambient temperature.

I guess I had better get everything set up and ready to go, so it doesn't take me 7 days to figure it all out once I have eggs!

Best Wishes, Eve, You're the best!!! One of these times, it's gonna go for ya!

....but that is part of the "breeding" aspect as opposed to just enjoying the lizards as pets. My last leo egg was a "dead in shell" too, though the other (from last pair of the season) hatched out fine. I've had one croc skink dead in shell this year too, quite a drag, since I REALLY want to get a CB croc. And then there are all the collared dud eggs, which I have been discarding as they mold and deflate. There are several of them left, but its doubtful any are fertile. Hoover has really gotten her orange bands again, so I'll probably have to go through it at least once more this year LOL. Hang in there, its all just the luck of the draw sometimes. Some years you can't do anything wrong, other years, you can't bust a grape with a sledgehammer. Kinda like farming!

I opened them all as of today, I had 2 I had been waiting on.
5 were perfectly formed and normal size, and pretty but dead.

I had told Johneee, one egg was still very white and full, I opened it, knowing it was 73 days old. And the weirdest thing, the hatchling was almost embryo type shaped, his limbs not down yet, but he had his color, little stripes.

So weird that all grew and formed to perfect size and died but that guy never even grew past that point !
I don't want to appear terrible but I took a pic of the difference, how I found them. Just for future , I guess, to learn from.

I liked your grape and sledgehammer comparison, LMAO very good, and Farming is that bad sometimes, hunh? I guess I always looked at the cool side (the land, and critters) and thought wow, wish I had a farm. Eve
