smoke inhalation from fire

stikigekko Nov 14, 2003 10:24 AM

We had a small fire in our apartment this morning. The whole apartment was filled with smoke. The fire was caused by a mercury vapor light that was left face down on our kitchen counter and turned on by the light timer. It was right next to my iguanas enclosure and I am very worried about Zilla, and all of my pets right now. I also have a ball python, 2 crested geckos, a golden gecko, a leopard gecko and a tarantula. Does anyone know if there is anything that I can do to help my pets or if they are going to be ok?

It all depends on the amount of smoke that was inhaled. Make
sure you move your pets somewhere safe and warm and air out the
house very well. Watch for signs of breathing difficulties.
If your Iguana was in a very tall cage it probably got the
brunt of it because smoke will rise first. The fact that
the enclosure was right next to the fire might be of concern.
I would maybe take your Ig in for a check by a vet. Sometimes
burning can be caused to the lungs which could mean big
problems.

I hope everyone turns out OK.

well, i don't think they were exposed to it for too long, my boyfriend was here and he woke up and opened all the windows and the door...

it is also to our advantage that our apartment has 15ft tall cielings so the tall iguana cage doesnt even come close to the cieling of the apartment.

unfortuantely we have nowhere to move our pets so they are still in the apartment. the smoke has cleared byt it REALLY stinks in here...

i guess renters insurance would have been a good idea.........
